“어이가 없다”는 너무 황당하거나 기가 막힐 때 감정을 표출하는 표현으로 자주 사용됩니다.
이 표현은 상황에 따라 놀람, 분노, 황당함, 실소 등 다양한 감정을 담을 수 있기 때문에 영어로 번역할 때도 “I’m speechless,” “This is ridiculous,” “Are you serious?” 등 맥락에 따라 다른 표현을 선택해야 합니다.

There are quite a lot of ways to say this as a standalone expression, but some of these can sound a little off when used as part of a sentence. For milder cases describing actions, expressions of disbelief can work: "It's incredible that he did this," or "this is an unbelievable waste of money."
For people's feelings, expressions of surprise: "I was so shocked that all I could do was smile" or "He was completely taken aback."

When reacting to something you didn’t see coming in friendly company, “I cannot” will often do. I cannot believe; I cannot react to this situation appropriately; I cannot finish my own sentence. “I can’t even,” works for those who are going for “I cannot fathom (something)” but are too shocked to complete the thought. If you are reacting to a specific person’s actions in disbelief, “I can’t with you/them” is often used colloquially.
친한 사람들 사이에서 예상 못 한 일에 반응할 때는 “I cannot” 만으로도 충분할 때가 많습니다.
예를 들어, I cannot believe (진짜 믿기지가 않는다), I cannot react to this situation appropriately (이 상황에 어떻게 반응해야 할지 모르겠다), I cannot finish my own sentence (너무 당황해서 말도 제대로 못 하겠다) 같은 느낌으로 쓰일 수 있습니다.
“I can’t even”은 “I cannot fathom (도저히 이해가 안 된다)”라는 의미를 전하고 싶을 때 적절한데, 너무 충격적이라 말조차 마무리를 못 하는 느낌을 살릴 때 자주 씁니다. 또, 누군가의 행동이 너무 말도 안 될 때는 “I can’t with you/them” 같은 표현을 구어체로 많이 사용합니다.
